Highlighting the love and hate story between ‘black’ and ‘white,’ Who Rules the World became Yang Yang and Zhao Lusi’s comeback drama with a huge success.

Who Rules the World is a wuxia drama series adapted from Qing Ling Yue’s novel entitled ‘Qie Shi Tian Xia’ (试天下). The drama, aired in April 2022, starred top Chinese actors and actresses, Yang Yang and Zhao Lusi, as the main leads. Besides its well-known cast, Who Rules the World is also directed by Yin Tao, one of China’s most prominent directors.

Divided into 40 episodes, Who Rules the World tells the story of two martial arts masters who never get along, Bai Feng Xi (Zhao Lusi) and Hei Feng Xi (Yang Yang). Bai Feng Xi is one of the disciples of the Tianshuang martial arts sect who has a reckless and free-spirited personality. Hei Feng Xi is an elegant and respected young master who owns and founded Yinquan Water Pavilion. Both of them are martial arts masters with unbeatable skills, but they always get into disagreements that end up with misunderstandings. For the past ten years, they have fought for the title of Number One in the martial arts world. However, the issue of Xuanji’s plate disappearance makes their destinies seem connected, and they have to work together because of it.

Based on the storyline, Who Rules the World belongs to a wuxia romance drama with a simple and unbranched storyline, yet it can make the audience curious. Yin Tao managed to execute the storyline very well. The CGI effects displayed are smooth as real and spoil the eyes. The audience will also get amazed by the chemistry built by the two main leads.

In addition to the well-built chemistry, there is a fun fact about the main characters in Who Rules the World. The two main characters, Hei Feng Xi and Bai Feng Xi, have the same last name, Feng Xi. Besides that, their surnames are also interesting. Hei means ‘black,’ and Bai means ‘white.’ Black and White fit perfectly with their contrasting attitudes, but they actually complement each other, like Yin and Yang.

As proof of this series’ success, Who Rules the World has won 7 awards since it first aired until now. Some of these are the Annual Audience Favorite Series at the 2022 Tencent Video Golden Goose Awards and The Annual Web Drama at The Annual Ceremony of Cultural Responsibility & Influence 2023. At the end of 2022, Who Rules the World also ranked first in Netflix Chinese dramas (including Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan) with a score of 3,068. It was included in Netflix’s Top 10 Series in 16 countries and is the only Chinese drama that has made it into the Netflix Global Top 100. In addition, Who Rules the World has a high and stable rating on several rating websites, such as 9.4/10 on WeTV, 8.7/10 on MyDramaList, and 8.3/10 on IMDb.

Who Rules the World can be watched online on several streaming platforms, including WeTV, Netflix, and Iflix.
